Transform Your Profile
Have you ever avoided a photo, turned your head to hide a certain angle, or wished your nose looked more balanced with your other features?
The shape or size of your nose can be a deeply personal source of insecurity. It can impact self-confidence, make social situations stressful, and keep you from feeling like the best version of yourself.
Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, can help you achieve a nose that feels right for you. Even subtle changes can make a powerful difference in how you look and how you carry yourself.
Understanding how rhinoplasty works and the changes it can make can help you picture what’s ahead. Our rhinoplasty surgeon helps patients in Scottsdale and Phoenix decide whether this procedure is the right choice for them.
What to Know About Rhinoplasty in Scottsdale
Rhinoplasty, often called a nose reshaping or nose job surgery, is a plastic surgical procedure designed to refine the size, shape, and proportions of the nose so it better complements the rest of the face.
Depending on your concerns, rhinoplasty can smooth a prominent bump on the bridge, refine or lift the nasal tip, narrow wide nostrils, or adjust the overall projection and width of the nose.
The internal structure of the nose is made up of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue, all layered and interdependent. Each element must be reshaped carefully to maintain both strength and airflow.
Due to its complexity, rhinoplasty often involves a blend of aesthetic refinement and structural correction.
The nose’s delicate framework is made of multiple layers and structures, and even small refinements require precision to achieve great results.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty
When you decide to get a rhinoplasty, you’re doing more than changing your appearance. Many patients share that these changes can positively impact many areas of life. Here’s what rhinoplasty can offer you:
Ideal Candidates
Not everyone seeking rhinoplasty is looking for the same result. The ideal candidates share certain qualities that set the stage for a safe procedure and satisfying results:

Unhappy with Nose Shape or Size
Maybe it’s a bump you’ve learned to hide in pictures, a tip that feels too round or too pointed, or a shape that doesn’t match you.

Healthy and Ready for Surgery
Good physical health and well-managed medical conditions support faster healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Realistic Expectations
The goal of rhinoplasty is not to make you look like someone else, but to enhance your own natural features.

Facial Maturity
The nose should be fully developed before surgery. This usually happens around age 15 for girls and 17 for boys.

Nicotine-Free Lifestyle
Smoking before and after surgery can slow the healing process and affect your results. A nicotine-free period is essential.
Choosing rhinoplasty is a personal decision that should be made for your own well-being. When the timing and motivations are right, you will know you’re ready to take this step.

Rhinoplasty Consultation at Our Scottsdale Office
Your consultation is the first step toward achieving a nose that looks natural and feels right. During this appointment, Dr. Mark will examine your nose both externally and internally, assess your breathing, and review your medical history to determine whether rhinoplasty is the right choice.
Photos will be taken for digital imaging or surgical planning, which will allow you to better visualize potential results.
Dr. Mark will explain the procedure, outline the recovery process, discuss any risks, and set realistic expectations based on your anatomy and desired outcome.
Your input is an essential part of this process, and our goal is to make sure you feel informed, confident, and supported every step of the way.
How to Prepare for Your Rhinoplasty
Before your facial surgery, Dr. Mark will provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions. Following these carefully will help ensure a smooth procedure and the best possible results. Preparation may include:

Skin Care Routine
Keep nasal skin clean and lightly moisturized. Avoid strong treatments during the week leading up to surgery.

Breathing Assessment
Pay attention to any congestion or breathing concerns so you can discuss them with Dr. Mark during your pre-op visit.

Transportation Arrangements
Have a trusted person drive you home after surgery and assist with early recovery needs.

Medication Restrictions
Stop blood-thinning medications, NSAIDs, and certain supplements as instructed, usually one to two weeks before surgery.

Work Schedule Planning
Arrange time away from work or social activities since swelling and bruising can last one to two weeks.

Avoid Nasal Trauma
Be careful not to bump or press on your nose for several weeks, and sleep in a position that keeps it safe.
Our team will guide you through each step with clarity for results that meet your expectations.
What are the Steps of a Rhinoplasty?
While each rhinoplasty that Dr. Mark performs is customized to the patient’s needs and facial anatomy, most surgeries follow this series of carefully planned stages:
Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty
One of the first decisions in planning your rhinoplasty is determining the surgical approach. While both open and closed techniques can produce excellent results, each has its own advantages, recovery considerations, and ideal applications.
Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is performed by making a small incision across the columella (the thin strip of tissue between your nostrils), which allows Dr. Mark to lift the nasal skin and fully expose the bone and cartilage beneath.
This approach helps Dr. Mark see every detail of the nasal framework. It is often recommended for cases that require structural grafting, significant reshaping of the nasal tip, or reconstruction after trauma. The incision leaves only a small, discreet scar that typically fades over time.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty hides all incisions inside the nostrils, leaving no external scar. As the nasal skin is not lifted, this approach often results in less swelling and a shorter recovery in the early stages.
It is typically recommended for patients needing moderate refinements, such as smoothing a dorsal hump, narrowing a wide bridge, or making subtle tip adjustments.
Dr. Mark will give you more details about which approach is best for you during your consult.
Related Procedures
While both procedures involve the nose, some of these related procedures address very different concerns. Understanding the difference can help you make the right decision.
Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a procedure to straighten a deviated septum, the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal passages. A crooked septum can cause congestion, snoring, sinus infections, and difficulty breathing. The surgery repositions the septum through incisions inside the nostrils, so no external scars are visible. It may be performed alone or alongside rhinoplasty when both function and appearance need correction2.
Turbinate Reduction
Turbinates are small structures inside the nose that warm and humidify air. When enlarged, they can obstruct airflow and cause chronic congestion. Turbinate reduction removes or reshapes excess tissue to improve breathing while preserving natural nasal function.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is for patients who are unhappy with the results from a prior surgery or still experience breathing problems. Since it involves working with scar tissue and altered anatomy, it is often more complex. A tailored approach can restore both nasal function and appearance.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline
Dr. Mark will give you personalized instructions to make sure your healing process is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
Day 1
You’ll go home the same day with a splint on your nose to protect its new shape. Plan to rest, keep your head elevated, and have someone with you for the first 24 hours.
Week 1
Swelling and bruising will be most noticeable during the first few days and will begin to improve toward the end of the week. You’ll return for your follow-up appointment so Dr. Mark can remove your splint.
Weeks 2-3
Bruising typically fades, and swelling continues to decrease. By the end of the second or third week, most people feel comfortable going out in public without noticeable signs of surgery.
Weeks 4-6
You can usually return to light exercise after two weeks, but vigorous workouts and activities that risk impact to the nose should wait until at least four to six weeks, or until Dr. Mark gives clearance.
Months 3-6
During the 3-6 months mark, swelling continues to resolve, and the nose begins to take on a more refined appearance. Any lingering stiffness or sensitivity should gradually fade.
Year 1
After your first year, the final results are visible and all residual swelling is gone. This is when your nose should now feel fully natural in both appearance and function.

Dr. Mark’s Recovery Tips
- Keep your head elevated for the first week
- Avoid blowing your nose for a few weeks
- Wear glasses only when cleared
- Protect your nose from direct sunlight
