Feel Comfortable in Your Own Skin
If you’ve ever felt weighed down by the size of your breasts, struggled with back or shoulder pain, or avoided certain clothing because of how it fit, you might be considering a breast reduction.
For many women, large breasts can create physical strain and emotional discomfort. The constant pull of breast weight can cause bra strap grooves, poor posture, and limit your ability to enjoy exercise or sports.
Breast reduction surgery offers a way to relieve that discomfort while improving breast shape and proportion. By removing excess breast tissue and lifting the breasts, Dr. Mark can create a lighter, more balanced figure.
If you’ve ever wished your breasts were smaller, our team in Scottsdale can explain how breast reduction works to help you picture what is possible and decide whether this is the right next step for you.
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes extra skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the breast.
The goal is to reduce breast size, reshape the breast, and lift it to a perkier position on the chest.
During a breast reduction procedure, Dr. Mark, a leading breast specialist for patients in Phoenix and Scottsdale, reshapes the remaining tissue and repositions the nipple and areola to match the new breast contour.
The result is a smaller breast that feels lighter and looks more proportionate with the rest of the body1.
If you are ready to reduce your size, breast reduction may be the right solution.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
When you choose breast reduction surgery in the Phoenix metro area, you are doing more than reducing your breast size. Here’s what the procedure can offer you:
Ideal Candidates
for Breast Reduction
The best candidates for this procedure have realistic expectations and understand the surgical process. Consider whether these characteristics apply to you:

Disproportionately Large Breasts
Breast size causes pain, posture problems, or limits daily activities, making reduction surgery a functional solution.

Stable Weight and Health
You maintain a steady weight and are free from medical conditions that could increase risks.

Good Skin Quality
Your breast skin has enough elasticity to adapt well to a smaller breast size and maintain a natural shape.

Completed Breast Development
Your breasts have finished growing, usually after age 18, though timing may vary for some patients.

Realistic Expectations
You have a clear understanding of the procedure, including scarring, recovery time, and potential changes in sensation.
Many patients find that breast reduction significantly improves their quality of life and comfort. If you’re considering breast reduction, a consultation can help determine if this procedure aligns with your goals.

Your consultation is the first step toward achieving a breast size and shape that feels right for you. During this appointment, Dr. Mark will evaluate your breasts, assess your skin quality and nipple position, and review your medical history to determine whether you’re a good candidate for breast reduction.
Dr. Mark will explain the reduction surgery, discuss incision patterns, outline recovery, and set realistic expectations. Every detail of your surgical plan will be tailored to your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Your input is an essential part of the process, and the goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and supported from start to finish.
How to Prepare for Your Breast Reduction
Before your breast reduction surgery, Dr. Mark will provide detailed pre-operative instructions. Preparation may include:

Prepare Your Sleeping Area
Arrange extra pillows or use a recliner to keep your upper body elevated during the first few nights.

Front-Opening Clothing
Choose loose, front-closing shirts or zip-up tops so you do not need to pull anything over your head.

Arrange Support
Have a trusted person drive you home after surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Post-Surgical Bras
Have supportive, wireless post-surgical bras or compression garments ready to wear once cleared.

Organize Essentials
Place clothing, toiletries, and daily-use items at chest height so you can access them without raising your arms.

Prepare Your Space
Stock up on soft foods, water, and easy-to-reach essentials to avoid unnecessary bending or stretching during recovery.
Taking these steps will help you feel ready and supported as you go into surgery.
What are the Steps of a Breast Reduction Procedure?
Each breast reduction surgery is customized to the patient, but most follow these steps:
Breast Reduction Techniques
There are several surgical approaches for breast reduction, and the right one depends on your goals, breast size, and skin quality. Here are the two main techniques Dr. Mark uses:
Anchor Pattern
This traditional technique uses three incisions: around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the breast crease to create an anchor-like pattern. It’s ideal for patients requiring significant tissue removal and provides excellent access for reshaping. While it creates more scarring, it offers the most dramatic size reduction and lifting capability for larger breasts.
Vertical Pattern
The vertical technique uses only two incisions: around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. This approach works well for moderate size reductions and creates less scarring than the anchor pattern. It’s particularly suitable for patients with good skin elasticity who need less dramatic size reduction.

Breast Reduction Recovery Timeline
We will provide a personalized recovery plan to support the smooth healing of your breast reduction.
Day 1
On the day of surgery, you will go home wearing a surgical bra. Plan to rest, take prescribed medications as directed, and keep your upper body elevated to minimize swelling.
Days 2-7
During the first week, mild swelling, bruising, and soreness are normal. Many patients feel comfortable returning to non-strenuous work within 7–10 days, but lifting and exercise remain restricted.
Weeks 2-3
By the second and third weeks, bruising fades and swelling continues to improve. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own, and light daily activities become easier to manage.
Month 1
At the one-month mark, energy improves noticeably. Some patients may begin light exercise if cleared by Dr. Mark, though full activity is still limited.
Weeks 5-6
By the fifth and sixth weeks, most patients resume normal activities, including exercise and lifting, with clearance. Swelling is significantly reduced, and breasts continue to settle.
Months 3-6
At three to six months, final results become apparent as tissues settle into their natural position. Scars soften and fade, and results appear more refined and stable.
